Abstract

Charlie Hebdo French shooting incident took place on 7 January 2015 and four years later another shooting attack took place in Christchurch, New Zealand. Both cases attract a lot of media attention and related to Islam. Online media news is influenced by media ideology as shown in framing. This study aims to describe the two United States media, Public Broadcasting Service and USA Today frame on Christchurch and Charlie Hebdo cases. This study uses framing theory by Pan and Kosicki. The results show that framing of Islam in the Christchurch case was more focused on the post-incident. Meanwhile, Charlie Hebdo's article focuses on the attacker's background and religion. Both media portray Islam and Muslims in negative view with selected terms such as terrorism, Islamic extremists, and radicals. The contribution of this research is to describe the United States news framing related to the case of Islam and Muslims.
