Abstract

ABSTRACT MIFTAHURRACHMAN, MUHAMMAD WILDAN. 2021. Deception in Murder of the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. A Skripsi: Jakarta, English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts, Universitas Negeri Jakarta Since the beginning of human history, because people always try to deceive each other for their own benefit, lies and deception have been one of the most common things that happened. Deception act is heavily depend on the context of the utterance that it can be considered hard to find the sample, hence why the use of literature as the main source of samples. The literature used in this study is novel Murder on the Orient Express because most of its characters are deceiver with a lot of deceptive utterance which make this novel good as main source of sample to observe and analyze. The aim for this study is to analyze the deception act portray from each character from novel Murder of the Orient Express and groups them based on Dariusz Galasinski theories of deception, which are: Falsification, Distortion, Taking word out of context, Evasion, Metadiscursive Deception, and Extra-linguistic Deception. This study use qualitative method to gather the data and use textual analysis approach to analyze it. This study show that most of the characters tried to do deceptive act by any means necessary, because deception takes on many form, from only lying to withholding information, evasive answer behavior, concealing information, spinning / half-truth, bullshit (Frankfurt, 2005). Some of act was already planned, while some other act happened spontaneously. This study conclude that among six types of deceptive strategies, the dominant type that being used by the characters is deception by falsification, the strategy in which the deceiver manipulates participant and process to create a false truth while being in the same context of the utterance. This fact show that when the character try to deceive, their main purpose is to hide the truth while gaining the satisfactory results. Next is the deception by distortion, which means that even an honest utterance can be deceptive. After that is covert evasion and metadiscursive that have similarity in the concept: the deceiver pretend to be cooperative, which means that the deceiver will do everything to deceive their target, like pretending to be friend and cooperative. This study conclude that this novel is able to show how deceptive strategies work in each utterance. Each character are able to hide their true nature and their deceptive act work splendidly. Sejak awal sejarah manusia, berbohong dan penipuan merupakan hal yang paling umum terjadi. Manusia saling menipu orang lain demi mendapatkan keuntungan pribadi. Kegiatan menipu sangat bergantung pada konteks yang sedang dibicarakan, karena itu sangat sulit untuk mendapatkan contoh langsung didunia nyata. Itulah kenapa karya sastra digunakan sebagai sumber utama untuk contoh-contoh tersebut. Karya sastrav yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah novel Murder of The Orient Express Karena sebagian besar karakter dalam novel ini adalah penipu dengan banyaknya tindakan penipuan sehingga novel ini sangat cocok sebagai sumber utama untuk observasi dan analisis. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis kegiatan menipu dari karakter-karakter dalam novel Murder of the Orient Express dan mengelompokan kegiatan menipu tersebut berdasarkan enam jenis strategi menipu dalam teori Dariusz Galasinski, yakni: Falsification, Distortion, Taking word out of context, Covert Evasion, Metadiscursive Deception, dan Extra-linguistic deception. Skripsi ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk mengumpulkan data-data dan pendekatan analisis wacana untuk menganalsisnya. Setelah itu skrisi ini menggunakan teori-teori penipuan dari Dariusz Galasinski untuk menganalisa data-data tersebut. Skripsi ini menemukan bahwa sebagian besar karakter yang ada berusaha untuk menipu dengan berbagai cara. Karena penipuan hadir dalam berbagai wujud, dari hanya berbohong, hingga menahan informasi, menghindari pertanyaan, menyembunyikan informasi, memutar balikan kebenaran, omong kosong (Frankfurt, 2005). Sebagian tindakan sudah direncanakan sebelumnya, dan sebagian yang lain terjadi secara spontan. Skripsi ini menyimpulkan, bahwa diantara enam jenis strategi penipuan, strategi falsification, dimana penipu memanipulasi partisipan dan proses dan menciptakan kebenaran palsu meskipun masih dalam konteks percakapan yang sama, merupakan jenis yang paling dominan. Fakta ini menunjukkan, bahwa keinginan dasar tiap karakter ketika menipu adalah menyembunyikan kebenaran dan disaat yang bersamaan mendapatkan hasil yang diinginkan. Jenis selanjutnya adalah strategi Distortion, yang menunjukkan bahwa bahkan kalimat jujur pun bisa menipu. Setelah itu adalah Covert evasion dan Metadsicursive yang memiliki persamaan: sang penipu berusaha untuk terlihat kooperatif. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penipu akan menghalalkan segala cara untuk mendapatkan keinginannya, meskipun itu berarti mereka harus berpura-pura menjadi teman. Skripsi ini menyimpulkan bahwa novel ini mampu menunjukkan bagaiman strategi penipuan bekerja dalam percakapan. Setiap karakter mampu untuk menyembunyikan sifat asli mereka agar tindakan menipu mereka berjalan dengan baik.
