Abstract
The objective of this research was to understand comprehensively and describe how the five continents folklore text based systemic functional linguistic approach for the purpose of identifying the types of processes and characterization techniques, which are used to introduce the main character in the introductory paragraph. This research is a descriptive qualitative with content analysis methods. The data was all clauses contained in the introductory text are taken from the text folklore five continents. From the analysis of data and discussion shows that there are two main types of process in introducing the character that is material and relational processes. And the characterization techniques are more concerned with the depiction of the main character using indirect depiction techniques with depictions the background, another character reactions, behaviors, and stream of consciousness. The findings lead to the recommendation to teachers or policy makers will eventually have to choose stories that fit the culture of the people of Indonesia, as a pedagogical tool in developing communicative competence because load values education students.
