Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan perjalanan hidup Abdul Karim Oey Tjeng Hien serta perannya dalam menyebarkan agama Islam kepada etnis Tionghoa lewat organisasi yang beliau dirikan — Persatuan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia. Penelitian ini mengkaji dua permasalahan: (1) Bagaimana perjalanan hidup H. Abdul Karim Oey dari masa kecil di Padang sampai hijrahnya ke Jakarta (2) Bagaimana latar belakang H. Abdul Karim Oey mendirikan PITI serta perannya dalam berdakwah di kalangan etnis Tionghoa lewat organisasi tersebut? Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut, peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah. Penelitian sejarah mempunyai lima tahap, yaitu: pemilihan topik, heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Tahap pertama, yaitu pemilihan topik berdasarkan ketertarikan penulis terhadap perjalanan hidup dan peran tokoh dalam berdakwah. Selain itu belum adanya penelitian yang membahas peran beliau dalam organisasi PITI. Selanjutnya proses heuristik, penulis mengumpulkan sumber primer berupa buku autobiografi, majalah, dan transkip wawancara serta sumber sekunder berupa buku dan jurnal ilmiah, lalu diverifikasi secara internal dan eksternal guna menguji kredibilitas dan autentisitas sumber. Sumber-sumber yang telah diuji kemudian ditafsirkan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif naratif. Kemudian langkah terakhir mengungkapkannya dalam bentuk tulisan yang sistematis yang disusun dalam 4 bab. Dari hasil penelitian ini, peneliti mendapatkan informasi mengenai kehidupan keluarga Abdul Karim Oey yang memiliki jiwa sosial yang tinggi yang sedikit banyak membentuk karakter dan kepribadian sang tokoh. Peneliti juga mendapatkan gambaran bahwa lewat kegelisannya terhadap kepercayaan yang selama ini dianutnya, Oey akhirnya mencari pegangan hidup sampai akhirnya Oey memutuskan menjadi seorang Muslim. Beliau juga aktif dalam organisasi Muhammadiyah bahkan pernah mengagalkan rencana Pemerintah Jepang yang akan membubarkan Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. Kemudian mengenai berdirinya PITI, berawal dari keresahan K.H. Ibrahim yang merasa organisasi Islam kurang merangkul etnis Tionghoa. PITI sendiri menjadi sarana Oey dalam mewujudkan asimilasi melalui pendekatan agama. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa Oey merupakan salah satu tokoh Tionghoa Muslim sekaligus seorang pendakwah yang berjasa dalam perkembangan masyarakat Tionghoa Muslim di Indonesia. Oey lebih banyak mengaplikasikan pemikirannya lewat peran ataupun tindakannya dalam kehidupan. Hal ini terbukti lewat usahanya dalam berdakwah di kalangan masyarakat Tionghoa. The purpose of this study is to investigate the roles of Haji Abdul Karim Oey Tjeng Hien in disseminating Islam, particularly in Chinese ethnic through the organization he established – PITI (Persatuan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia) or The association of Indonesian-Chinese Muslims. This study examines two problems: 1) How was his journey of life from his childhood in Padang until he moved to Jakarta? ; 2) How was the historical background why he founded PITI and his role in disseminating Islam among Indonesia-Chinese etnics through the organization? To answer the questions, the researcher used the historical research method. The historical research method is used in this study. There are 5 steps in the historical research: 1) selecting the topic, 2) heuristic, 3) verification, 4) interpretation, and 5) historigraphy. The first step, selecting the topic is based on the researcher’s interest in the life journey and his role in dakwah. Besides, there has not been a research to investigate his role in PITI. The second step is heuristic process, the researcher was collecting the primary sources such as authobiography, magazines, and interview script. The secondary sources like books and academic journals. All the sources were verified internally and externally to examine the authenticity and credibility of the sources. The examined sources were then interpreted by using descriptive and narrative approach. Finally, the last step was to write systematically and logically in four chapters. From the research, the researcher found the information about the background of Haji Abdu Karim Oey’s family whose high social life. His family social lfe built his personality. The researcher explains how he became Muslim. Oey finally found his way of life until he decided to be a Muslim. Oey was also active in the Islamic organization of Muhammadiyah and he struggled to prevent Japanese authority from disbanding Muhammadiyah. In this research, the researcher describes why he established PITI. The establishment of PITI firstly when K.H. Ibrahim was really concerned about the Islamic organizations did not embraced Chine etnics in Indonesia then. That is one of the aims Oey founded PITI. PITI was used by Oey to realize the assimilation through religious approach. Haji abdul Karim Oey was one of the Chinese-Muslims as well as a preacher whose roles in the developmentChinese-Muslim community in Indonesia. He spent most of his life time to contribute his thought and actions. This fact is proved through his efforts in dakwah among Chinene community.
