Abstract

******** This study aims at (1) analyzing the forms of interrogative sentences in English and Indonesian language found in James Dashner’s The Fever Code, and (2) finding out the similarities and differences of interrogative sentences between English and Indonesian in the novel. The research method adopted in this study is a descriptive qualitative method. There are two sources of data for this study: the original version of The Fever Code in English, and the translated version of the novel in Indonesian. The data used for analysis are in the form of interrogative sentences that have been collected and selected through purposive and quota sampling. These data will be contrasted and analyzed based on the English interrogative sentence classification by Biber et al. (1999) and the Indonesian interrogative sentence classification by Moeliono et al. (2017). The classification includes yes/no-questions (starting with be, transitive, auxiliary, or modal), wh-questions, and tag questions. The results reveal that there are some similarities and differences between English and Indonesian interrogative sentences found in The Fever Code. The similarities and differences lie in the forms of interrogative sentences in each type. The forms of yes/no-questions in English are similar to those of yes/no-questions in Indonesian. For wh-questions, the similarities are the use and position of the question word (wh-word), and the position of the object. Yet, the question word in Indonesian can be placed at the beginning or at the end of the question. The question word can also be translated as other question words in Indonesian. Also, the predicate in English is interrupted by the subject in between, while in Indonesian the predicate is always placed after the subject. Last but not least, the similarities of tag questions between the two languages are the form of the main clause and the use and position of a comma. Even so, the elements used are different. There are two elements in English: an operator and a personal pronoun. Meanwhile, there is only one element in Indonesian: a negation or an affirmative. Another difference is the polarity of the main clause and the tag question.
