Abstract

ABSTRACT For many pasts years, anxiety has been a well-documented phenomenon in foreign language researches. Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) is reported to have an important role in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. As the widespread use of English pressured non-native students in higher education to have certain proficiency in speaking, they may become highly anxious. Therefore, this study aimed to identify students’ FLA in Public Speaking class. Qualitative case study research design was applied in this study. Students registered in Public Speaking classes of English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) in State University of Jakarta are chosen to filled in the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire. It was found that 54% of the students have a severe level of FLA. Therefore, a less anxiety-inducing method of teaching and learning is highly recommended. Keywords: Anxiety, Foreign Language Anxiety, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), and Public Speaking ********** ABSTRAK Selama beberapa tahun terakhir, kecemasan telah menjadi fenomena yang sangat terdokumentasi dalam penelitian bahasa asing. Kecemasan berahasa asing dilaporkan memiliki peran penting dalam kelas Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Karena meluasnya penggunaan Bahasa Inggris menekan siswa non-native di pendidikan tinggi untuk memiliki tingkat kemahiran tertentu dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, mereka mungkin menjadi sangat cemas. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tingkat kecemasan bahasa asing siswa di kelas Public Speaking. Studi kasus kualitatif digunakan pada penelitian ini. Mahasiswa yang terdaftar pada kelas Public Speaking Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Jakarta dipilih untuk mengisi kuesioner Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). Ditemukan bahwa 54% siswa memiliki tingkat kecemasan bahasa asing yang tinggi. Oleh karena itu, metode pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang tidak menimbulkan kecemasan sangat dianjurkan.
