Abstract
Changes related to the COVID-19 pandemic have an impact on various psychological stresses, especially early adults whose developmental task is to build a stable and viable identity through the ability to adapt to demands. One of the protective factors that can help early adulthood in dealing with these stressful conditions is the construction of self-compassion. Thus, this study aims to determine the effect of self-compassion on psychological distress in early adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research sample consisted of 316 respondents, with the criteria that they were domiciled in the Greater Jakarta area and aged 18-25 years. Data collection begins on 12 to 22 July 2021 (within the PPKM period). This study uses an online questionnaire in the form of Google Form with accidental sampling method with a simple regression analysis method. This study measures psychological distress variables using the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) instrument by Darogatis, Lipman, Rickets, Uhlenhuth and Covi (1974). And the self-compassion variable was measured using the Self-Compassion Scale instrument developed by Kristin Neff (2003). The results of this study indicate that 91.5% of research respondents are indicated to be in high psychological distress and 8.5% of low psychological distress. The regression test showed that there was a negative effect of self-compassion on psychological distress in early adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. This shows that the higher the self-compassion, the lower the psychological distress, and vice versa. Self-compassion contributed 8.7% in predicting psychological distress in early adulthood, of which 91.3% was influenced by other factors not studied.
