Abstract

The appropriate teaching materials are needed in improving the students‟ language skills. Some researches have been done about teaching materials. This research aims at developing the teaching materials for basic listening in English based on the genre approach. The target clienteles of the research were students of English Language Teaching Study Program of State University of Padang, who were not in classroom with teaching materials based on genre and multimedia for listening course. The materials were developed using the research and development method. The results of the research show: (a) the existing materials are not suitable with the students‟ and lecturers‟ needs, especially in terms of input, text types, types of the topics, and types of activities; (b) there is a need for developing new set of materials based on a genre approach and learning multimedia; (c) in general, the new materials are considered good by the experts but they still need some revisions; (d) the materials are effective enough in improving students‟ skills in listening to different types of texts; and (e) after several revisions, the final product of the materials consists of student book, teacher‟s manual and multimedia materials. Thus, the conclusion is this new materials can be well implemented in teaching listening at the English Language Teaching Study Program of State University of Padang.
