Abstract

This study aims to describe and explain about the perceptions and attitudes of the students of the State University of Jakarta towards ethnic stereotypes and their attitudes formed due to the processes of externalisation, objectivation and internalisation which is analysed sociologically according to the perspective of Peter L Berger’s theory of the construction of social reality. This study uses a qualitative approach involving a case study. The research data were obtained through observation, interviews and documentation. The interview was conducted with five students in the State University of Jakarta who come from other parts of the country. The researcher also obtained secondary data from various sources, such as the news, pictures and documentation of province-based student unions and other secondary data required. Data collection began in August 2021 and ended in September 2021. The results of the study show that the perception of the students coming from other parts of the country have been socially constructed due to the process of externalisation, objectivation and internalisation where students are introduced to empathy, respecting each other and tolerance, thus all students are living in harmony at campus. The ethnic diversity of the students of the State University of Jakarta may cause ethnic conflict that could be prevented by tolerance inside the student circle and refraining from talking about sensitive issues because in principle friendship is based on comfort in communication and interaction. Students consider that ethnic stereotypes such as negative labeling on certain ethnic groups are just stereotyping and the opinion of some people which are not always accurate and could be totally wrong. Thus, the emergence of a negative stigma towards a certain ethnic group does not affect social interaction and friendship among students at the State University of Jakarta.
