Abstract

Cosmopolis mengangkat tema seputar ekonomi, kapitalisme, Marxisme dan kelas sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti cara penulis menggambarkan kesadaran palsu di Manhattan “fiksi” di Cosmopolis lewat tindakan kaum proletar terhadap tokoh utama borjuis dalam melanggengkan kepentingan ekonomi sang borjuis. Teori kelas Marxis digunakan dalam meneliti dialog dan narasi dari tokoh proletar terpilih yang bekerja kepada tokoh utama borjuis. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kaum proletar di dalam buku melakukan apa yang mereka dan masyarakat anggap benar dengan melayani pemilik modal dengan imbalan uang yang bisa mereka gunakan untuk mendapatkan kehidupan yang lebih baik, di saat seharusnya mereka bekerjasama untuk meruntuhkan sistem yang membuat mereka tetap berada dalam keadaan yang tidak menguntungkan sebagai pekerja. Cosmopolis takes themes around economy, capitalism, Marxism and social class. This study aims to analyse the author’s way to depict false consciousness in Cosmopolis’ “fictionalised” Manhattan through the proletariat’s actions toward the bourgeois main character in keeping on promoting of the latter’s economic interests. Marxist class theory is used to analyse the dialogues and narratives of the selected proletarian characters who work for the bourgeois main character. The result of the study shows that the proletariat in the book do what they and the society consider to be true by serving the capital owner in return of money which they can use to get better lives, when they should join efforts to tear down the system that keeps them stay in their unfavourable positions as workers.
