Abstract

The study is used to analyze the positive politeness strategy in the movie script entitled “Enola Holmes”. The objectives of the study are to find the politeness strategies in relation to Brown and Levinson politeness theory in a movie written by Jack Thorne. This study deals with pragmatic approach. It is a descriptive qualitative study. It employed purposive sampling as the sampling technique. The data of the study were the dialogues in a movie script from Harry Bradbeer. The writer uses Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategy. Specifically, because in the movie script there are many positive politeness strategies employed by the characters in it, this study focus on analyzing the types of positive politeness strategies and what context behind the use of the strategies. There are only 14 of 15 strategies of positive politeness strategy found in the movie script. From the result, the writer has found 107 data which mostly applied by Enola Holmes as the youngest character in the story. Meanwhile, the most widely used type of strategy is Strategy 12 with 20 utterances because at that time, people in the Victorian era prioritized manners towards others, they tried to include the other person in the conversation so that no one felt left out. The study expected to use as an integral part of learning positive politeness strategies and provide a reference for further research. Penelitian ini digunakan untuk menganalisis strategi kesantunan positif dalam naskah film berjudul “Enola Holmes”. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan strategi kesantunan dalam kaitannya dengan teori kesantunan Brown dan Levinson dalam film yang ditulis oleh Jack Thorne. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan pragmatis. Ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan purposive sampling. Data penelitian ini adalah dialog-dialog dalam naskah film Harry Bradbeer. Penulis menggunakan strategi kesantunan Brown dan Levinson. Secara khusus, karena dalam naskah film terdapat banyak strategi kesantunan positif yang digunakan oleh para karakter di dalamnya, penelitian ini berfokus pada menganalisis jenis-jenis strategi kesantunan positif dan konteks apa di balik penggunaan strategi tersebut. Hanya ada 14 dari 15 strategi strategi kesantunan positif yang ditemukan dalam naskah film. Dari hasil tersebut, penulis menemukan 107 data yang sebagian besar diterapkan oleh Enola Holmes sebagai karakter termuda dalam cerita. Sementara itu, jenis strategi yang paling banyak digunakan adalah Strategi 12 dengan 20 tuturan karena pada masa itu orang-orang di era Victoria lebih mengutamakan sopan santun terhadap orang lain, mereka berusaha memasukkan lawan bicara dalam percakapan agar tidak ada yang merasa tersisih. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat digunakan sebagai bagian integral dari pembelajaran strategi kesantunan positif dan memberikan referensi untuk penelitian lebih lanjut.
