Abstract

This thesis reports on a study that investigates the misplacement of word stress encountered by students in pronunciation. This study aimed at investigating the kinds of stress that are usually misplaced by students, investigating the kinds of words that are usually misplaced in term of stress based on their word classes and syllables, and investigating the factors caused the misplacement of stress in pronunciation. The method used in this study was case study with classroom observation, word stress test, interview as the instruments, and analyzed by content analysis. The subjects of this study were fifteen students of 13 Dik B in Public Speaking class who have passed English Phonetic and Phonology class. The fifteen students were observed in the class, and the word stress test was administered to the five out of fifteen students who were observed in the Public Speaking class. The interview was taken to eight out of fifteen students who were observed in the class. The data of this study is the students’ pronunciation when were observed in the class and when were given the test. The result shows that the kinds of stress were mostly misplaced on the case of primary case. It was found from the 311 mistress words, 290 words were on the case of primary stress. This study also found that the polysyllabic noun word was the most frequently encountered the misplaced stress, in which out of 311 mistress words, there were found 101 polysyllabic nouns. The factors causing the misplacement of stress in pronounciation were the difficulty to determine where to stress or what syllables should be stressed. It may because of the language interference. Thus, it indicated that the misplacement of word stress on primary stress is still problematic for students, and it is also supported with their difficulty in placing the stress on the polysyllabic noun words. Skripsi ini melaporkan penelitian tentang kesalahan penempatan pada penekanan kata yang dialami oleh mahasiswa di dalam pengucapan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki jenis penekanan kata yang sering ditempatkan salah, kata-kata yang sering ditempatkan salah penekanannya berdasarkan pada kelas kata dan suku katanya, serta fakor-faktor yang menyebabkan kesalahan penempatan pada penekanan kata di dalam pengucapan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu studi kasus dengan observasi kelas, tes penekanan kata, wawancara sebagai alat pengumpul data, dan dianalisis dengan analisis konten. Subjek penelitian ini yaitu 15 mahasiswa dari kelas 13 Dik B di kelas Public Speaking yang telah lulus dalam mata kuliah English Phonetic and Phonology. Kelimabelas mahasiswa tersebut diobservasi di kelas, dan tes penekanan kata dilakukan kepada 5 dari 15 siswa yang diobservasi di kelas Public Speaking. Wawancara dilakukan terhadap 8 dari 15 mahasiswa yang diobservasi di kelas. Data dari penelitian ini adalah pengucapan mahasiswa saat diobservasi di kelas, dan saat diberikan tes. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenis penekanan kata yang sering ditempatkan salah oleh siswa kebanyakan adalah primary stress. Ditemukan dari 311 kata-kata yang bertekanan salah, sebanyak 290 kata berasal dari kasus primary stress. Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa kata benda polisilabik menjadi yang paling sering terjadi salah penempatan penekanan kata, dimana dari 311 kata-kata yang bertekanan salah, sebanyak 101 ditemukan adalah kata benda polisilabik. Adapun faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan kesalahan penempatan dalam penekanan kata yaitu kesulitan untuk menentukan dimana harus memberikan tekanan atau suku kata manakah yg harus diberi penekanan. Hal ini bisa jadi disebabkan oleh interferensi bahasa. Dengan demikian, hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan penempatan terhadap penekanan di dalam kasus primary stress masih menjadi masalah bagi siswa, dan didukung oleh kesulitan mereka dalam menempatkan tekanan pada kata-kata benda yang polisilabik.
