Abstract

So Hard to Say karya Alex Sanchez. Ketika comes out of the closet, Frederick akhirnya diterima oleh beberapa teman sekolahnya, walaupun sebagian besar belum bisa menerimanya sebagai laki-laki penyuka sesama jenis. This study focuses on analyzing the sexual identity crisis Frederick experienced and his performativity in order to hide his sexual identity from his family and school peers in So Hard to Say by Alex Sanchez. Through the use of descriptive analytical interpretative method, Sedgwick’s concept of homosexuality, and Butler’s performativity theory, it aims to examine how Frederick deals with sexual identity crisis and how he performs his gender regarding his sexual identity. The results of this study show that Frederick’s mother’s repeated actions of sabotaging his quality time with his father indirectly constructs him as feminine due to the failure of engaging masculinity. Frederick’s religious view as a Lutheran which forbids homosexuality and homophobic behavior of his peers make him hides his sexual identity as gay in order to avoid hatred towards homosexuals. It results in Frederick hides his femininity and repeatedly performs as masculine through playing soccer. However, Frederick experiences homosocial desire as he cannot deny his sexual attraction to Victor. He also experiences homosexual panic when he is anxious of being labeled as gay if he is associated with Iggy. When he comes out of the closet, Frederick is finally being accepted by some of his peers, even though most of them still cannot accept him as gay.
