Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis transformasi Justin Bieber dalam sampul majalah musik Billboard dan Rolling Stone dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif dan teori semiotika sosial Gunther Kress dan Theo Van Leeuwen. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk menunjukkan bagaimana Billboard dan Rolling Stone merepresentasikan transformasi Justin Bieber berdasarkan sampul majalah. Teori ini terdiri dari tiga metafungsi yaitu representasional, interpersonal, dan komposisi. Ketiga metafungsi bertujuan untuk menganalisa visual (foto) dan teks tertulis. Sumber data yang digunakan merupakan tujuh sampul majalah yang dipilih berdasarkan jumlah terbanyak sampul majalah yang berkolaborasi dengan Justin. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa majalah Billboard merepresentasikan identitas Justin sebagai musisi kepada para pembaca sedangkan majalah Rolling Stone merepresentasikan identitas Justin sebagai makhluk sosial yang dilihat oleh masyarakat karena dia adalah produk budaya. This study analyses the transformation of Justin Bieber in the cover of music magazines: Billboard and Rolling Stone by using qualitative methodology and social semiotics approach by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen. The purpose of the study is to show how Billboard and Rolling Stone represent Justin Bieber’s transformation based on the magazine covers. The social semiotics theory has three metafunctions; representational, interpersonal, and compositional. Those three metafunctions aim to analyze the visualization and the textual (caption) of the cover magazines. The sources of the data are from seven cover magazines that have been selectively chosen based on the most Justin Bieber has collaborated with as their cover magazine. The result of the study shows Billboard magazine represents the identity of Justin as a musician to the viewer while Rolling Stone magazine represents Justin as a human being who is perceived by the viewer as a cultural product.
