Abstract

This research focuses on Japanese onomatopoeia translation in Mado Giwa no Totto Chan Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s novel by Latifah H. Rahmat and Nandang Rahmat. From this study, we hope to find four problems in onomatopoea of translation process. Those are the equivalence, the strategy of translation (translation methods and procedure included), translation error, and its causes. The data of research were collected from the source and the translated novels. The theories used in this research are translation equivalence according to Nida and Taber, translation strategies according to Newmark and Vinay and Darblenet, and translation error according to Sager. The result of the research reveals that 7 procedures were applied by the translators. The result shows as well that there are shifts of onomatopoeia forms from the source to the target languages. This is caused by the differences of language system between source and target languages. Viewed from the aspects of translation equivalence, the formal equivalence dominate more than dynamic equivalence. The benefits of this research could be used as additional information and references for anyone who wants to study translation especially for translation of Japanese onomatopoea.
