Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the feminist narratology techniques used in novel Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. This thesis tries to apply this new theory-feminist narratology to examine the narrative characteristics and women’s independent consciousness in Sense and Sensibility and what techniques or strategies the author used to make her novel being well accepted to the society. The analysis is conducted using many theories but dominantly by Susan Lanser’s Theory in her book “Toward Feminist Narratology”. Through the analysis it can be find out that the mostly used narratological technique used by Jane Austen to show her feminist ideology is Irony. Austen overtly shows a submission, but she covertly makes the female voice expressed and resistant to the old tradition. This research shows Jane Austen’s unique narratological skill and techniques showing feminist ideology.
