Abstract

Penelitian membahas tentang fenomena mencairnya konstruksi identitas mahasiswa di Instagram. Terdapat tiga tujuan penelitian. Pertama mendeskripsikan latar belakang mahasiswa membuat dua akun Instagram, kedua mendeskripsikan konstruksi identitas mahasiswa di dua akun Instagram, dan ketiga implikasi penggunaan dua akun Instagram terhadap identitas mahasiswa. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian berupa studi kasus. Peneliti mengambil data primer melalui wawancara mendalam serta data sekunder melalui pengamatan, dokumentasi, dan kajian literatur. Subjek penelitian ini adalah delapan orang mahasiswa UNJ yang berusia sekitar 17-22 tahun dan memiliki Second Account Instagram. Lokasi penelitian berfokus pada dua Profile akun mahasiswa di Instagram. Penelitian dilakukan dari bulan Febuari 2022 hingga bulan Mei 2022. Hasil temuan dari penelitian menunjukan bahwa latar belakang mahasiswa membuat dua akun adalah karena adanya bias berekspresi karena social media surveillance dan anonimitas di dunia maya. Mahasiswa melakukan konstruksi identitas yang berbeda-beda sesuai dengan persona mereka pada First Account. Persamaanya terletak pada konsep identitas ideal yang dimilki pada akun tersebut. Sementara itu, mereka menampilkan identitas yang berbeda kepada audiens dengan karakteristik yang juga berbeda di Second Account. Para mahasiswa dapat mengkonstruksi identitas apa saja yang mereka inginkan di Second Account. Penggunaan dua akun secara berkelanjutan menghadirkan beberapa implikasi, seperti membuat identitas mahasiswa menjadi terfragmentasi. Kemudian terlatih untuk memberikan penampilan identitas yang berbeda. Lebih bebas berekspresi di dunia maya dan terbuka dengan masyarakat digital mengenai kepribadiannya yang lain. Menerima perbedaan dengan identitasnya yang cair. Lalu, mereka juga mengalami eksplorasi identitas yang mengantarkan pada penemuan dan pengembangan diri. Di sisi lain adapula perasaan akan krisis identitas dan dilemma akan penampilan otentik di dunia maya. ***** This study discusses the phenomenon of students’ identity fluidity on Instagram. This study has three main objectives. First it aims to describe the background of students creating two Instagram accounts. Second it aims to describe the construction of student identities on two Instagram accounts. Third, it aims to describe the implications of using two Instagram accounts on student identity. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study type of research. Researchers took primary data through in-depth interviews and secondary data through observation, documentation, and literature review. The subjects of this study were eight State University of Jakarta students aged around 17-22 years and had a Second Account. The research location focuses on two student account profiles on Instagram. The research started from February 2022 to May 2022. The findings from this study show that the background of students creating two accounts is because there is a bias in expression due to social media surveillance and anonymity in cyberspace. Students construct different identities according to their personas on the First Account. The similarity lies in the concept of an ideal identity that belongs to the account. Meanwhile, they present a different identity to the audience with different characteristics in Second Account. Students can construct any identity they want in Second Account. The continuous use of two accounts has several implications, such as fragmenting student identities. Next, they are trained to give the appearance a distinct identity. More freedom of expression in cyberspace and open with the digital community about their other personalities. Accepting differences with his fluid identity. Then, they also experience identity exploration which leads to self-discovery and development. On the other hand, there is also a feeling of identity crisis and the dilemma of authentic appearance in cyberspace.
