Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan bagaimana karakter etika dibangun dalam praksis pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Menengah Pertama. Penelitian studi kasus dilakukan di SMPN 75 Jakarta Barat yang difokuskan pada satu kelas. Metode pengumpulan data berupa interview, observasi dan perekaman video pada aktivitas pembelajaran di kelas, interaksi berbahasa Inggris antara anggota sekolah, dan lingkungan sekolah. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sifat kepercayaan merupakan karakter yang paling sering dipelajari dalam kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris saling menghargai yang muncul sebanyak 17 kali, diikuti sifat menghargai yang muncul sebanyak 10 kali, lalu tanggung jawab sebanyak 8 kali, kemudian keadilan sebanyak 3 kali, dan kepedulian dan kewarganegaraan ditemukan muncul masing masing sebanyak 2 kali. Data temuan ini diperoleh dengan dengan cara mendeteksi / tracking kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, interaksi antar anggota sekolah, dokumen sekolah, guru bahasa Inggris, siswa, dan perspektif anggota sekolah lainnya di lingkungan sekolah SMPN 75 Jakarta. Sebagai kesimpulan, SMPN 75 Jakarta telah menerapkan praksis etika dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. ******** The study is aimed at investigating how ethics are learned in the praxis of English Language Instruction at Junior High School level. Case study employed in the research at SMPN 75 to be focused on one class. The method of data collecting was interview, observation and videotaping from classroom activities, school members’ interaction and English school environment. The study determined that trustworthiness was the most learned in the English language instruction occurred for 17 times, followed by respect for 10 times, then responsibility for 8 times, after that fairness for 3 times and caring and citizenship as the least learned for 2 times. These findings were tracked through English classroom learning activities,school members’ interaction, school documents, English teachers’ and students’ perspective, at SMPN 75 Jakarta. As the conclusion, it is confirmed that SMPN 75 Jakarta has implemented build learners’ characters especially ethics through English language instruction.
