Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan karakteristik kontrol diri pada tokoh utama dalam novel Thérèse Desqueyroux karya François Mauriac. Teori yang digunakan sebagai acuan dalam penelitian ini adalah sepuluh karakteristik kontrol diri oleh Durville (2017) yang terdiri dari ketenangan, keterkejutan, ketakutan, keberanian, keterpengaruhan, kesadaran diri, penyesalan, kepedulian, perhatian dan optimisme. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa analisis isi dengan menggunakan pendekatan struktural karya sastra. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mendeskripsikan unsur intrinsik novel yang berupa alur, penokohan dan latar terlebih dahulu. Setelah itu, analisis data dilakukan dengan mencari dan menginterpretasikan kata, frasa, kalimat, makna dan konteks dalam novel yang menunjukkan eksistensi karakteristik kontrol diri. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dua puluh sembilan (29) data yang ditemukan dalam novel Thérèse Desqueyroux karya François Mauriac yang memperlihatkan kontrol diri. Di antara jumlah data tersebut, terdapat sepuluh (10) kutipan yang berupa kepedulian, sembilan (9) kutipan yang berupa optimisme, empat (4) kutipan yang berupa keberanian, dua (2) kutipan yang berupa ketakutan, dua (2) kutipan yang berupa kesadaran diri, satu (1) kutipan yang berupa keterpengaruhan, satu (1) kutipan yang berupa perhatian, dan tidak ditemukan kutipan yang berupa ketenangan keterkejutan serta penyesalan. Berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilaksanakan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa novel Thérèse Desqueyroux mengindikasikan karakteristik kontrol diri dengan Thérèse Desqueyroux sebagai tokoh utama yang memiliki karakteristik kontrol diri kepedulian. *** This study aims to describe the characteristics of self-control implemented by the main character in the novel Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac. The theory used as a reference in this study are the ten characteristics of self-control by Durville (2017) which consist of calmness, surprise, fear, courage, influence, self-awareness, regret, caring, attention and optimism. The research method used in this study is content analysis using a structural approach to literary works. Data analysis was carried out by describing the intrinsic elements of the novel in the form of plot, characterizations and setting first. After that, data analysis is done by finding and interpreting words, phrases, sentences, meanings and contexts in the novel that show the existence of self-control characteristics. The results of this study indicate that there are twenty-nine (29) data found in the novel Thérèse Desqueyroux by François Mauriac which shows self-control. Among the data, there are ten (10) quotes in the form of caring, nine (9) quotes in the form of optimism, four (4) quotes in the form of courage, two (2) quotes in the form of fear, two (2) quotes in the form of self-awareness, one (1) quote in the form of influence, one (1) quote in the form of attention, and there are no quotes in the form of calmness, surprise and regret. Based on the research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that the novel Thérèse Desqueyroux indicates the character of self-control with Thérèse Desqueyroux as the main character who has the characteristic of caring self-control.
