Abstract

***** The rapid pull-out of the United States’ military troops from Afghanistan when the latter state fell to the Taliban brought the twenty years of war to end. President Biden's claim that it was an ‘extraordinary success’ raised criticisms and praises, especially in the U.S. This study investigates the pattern of appraising items found in The Washington Post and New York Times, and analyses how both media present their position in reporting the president's response to the Fall of Afghanistan. A corpus of six articles, comprising three from The Washington Post and three from New York Times, published between 15th August 2021 and 31st August 2021 is examined using Martin and White’s Appraisal theory. Findings indicate that both media platforms use Affect and Appreciation inclined to negative evaluation towards President Biden the most, are dominated by heterogloss engagement, and mostly graded by amplifying force. This study emphasises that both platforms share a similar perspective in presenting opposition to President Biden’s response.
