Abstract

This current research aims at getting deep understanding about classroom interaction at lower secondary schools. The research was carried out by qualitative approach using a systematic design of grounded-theory analysis method. The participants were twenty experienced English teachers at eight secondary schools in Jakarta. For collecting data, instruments were semi-structured interview, classroom observation/recording, and focused-group discussion. After three stages of coding based on grounded-theory analysis, the research findings show four major findings with the regards to interaction practices and their factors. Firstly, classroom interaction practices consist of four dimensions. Secondly, three factors affecting classroom interaction practices have been identified as causal factor, classroom contexts, social, institutional, and national factors. Moreover, the present research has also found that teachers use certain strategies in creating interaction in the classroom, such as repetition, translation, class preparation, and personal communication. At last, the teachers apply three modified IRF structure in interaction patterns.
