Abstract

Penelitian ini mengenai teknik pengajaran untuk penguasaan kosakata yang dinamai “Vocabulary Four Square.” Teknik ini bertujuan untuk menata konsep pemahaman siswa terhadap kosakata yang mereka pelajari dengan pendekatan non kontekstual. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan ada atau tidaknya peningkatan penguasaan siswa terhadap kosakata yang mereka pelajari.Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama, dengan sampel 80 siswa kelas tujuh SMP Labschool Jakarta yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Dengan melakukan penilaian pre dan pos test pada kelompok eksperimen, diketahui bahwa hipotesis nol: “Ada peningkatan signifikan terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa.” diterima karena uji hipotesis menggunakan t-test menunjukkan bahwa nilai t lebih besar dari t table, yaitu -1.70 ≤ 1.68 dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.05. Ditambah lagi, terdapat peningkatan pada nilai rata-rata pada kelompok eksperimen pada pre test 78.56 dan pos test 88.93.Berdasarkan hasil temuan, penelitian ini berkesimpulan bahwa teknik vocabulary four square dapat membantu siswa mengingat dan mendefinisikan kosakata. Maka, penelitian ini menyarankan teknik tersebut diterapkan dalam pengajaran kosakata. Ditambah lagi, pendekatan non kontekstual sebaiknya diberikan pada siswa saat mempelajari bahasa di tahap-tahap awal. ***** This study is about the teaching technique for vocabulary area by using the technique called “Vocabulary Four Square.” This technique allows the students to organize their thinking to comprehend the words they learn by learning the words in decontextualized approach. The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not there is an improvement in student’s vocabulary mastery. The population taken for this study is junior high school students, with the sample of 80 students grade seven of Labschool Junior High School Jakarta did act as the experimental and control group. Conducting the pre and post test assessment on the experimental group, it was discovered that the null hypothesis: “There is a significant improvement in student’s vocabulary mastery.” is accepted since the hypothesis testing using t-test showed that t value is less than t table, that is -1.70 ≤ 1.68 with the significance level of 0.05. In addition, there is an improvement in mean score in the experimental group in the pre test 78.56 and post test 88.93.Based on the result, this study concluded that vocabulary four square technique can help the students memorize the words and its definition. Therefore, this study also suggests the technique to be implemented in the vocabulary teaching area. In addition, it is better to present the decontextualized approach for the students in the early stages of language learning.
