Ahmad Musyalen Firdaus. Hubungan Diplomatik Indonesia-Brunei Darussalam (1984-1998). Skripsi. Jakarta: Program Studi Pendidikan Sejarah, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, Januari 2023. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan perkembangan hubungan diplomatik antara Indonesia dengan Brunei Darussalam pada masa Presiden Suharto yang dimulai setelah Brunei merdeka pada tanggal 1 Januari 1984 hingga Presiden Suharto mengundurkan diri pada bulan Mei 1998. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode historis untuk membahas terkait hubungan diplomatik antara Indonesia dengan Brunei Darussalam pada masa Orde Baru. Metode historis merupakan adalah metode penelitian yang menggunakan cara, prosedur ataupun teknik yang sistematik sesuai dengan asas dan aturan sejarah untuk menghasilkan tulisan sejarah. Metode historis memiliki empat tahapan yakni heuristik, kritik sumber, interpretasi dan historiografi. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah setelah Kemerdekaan Brunei Darussalam pada Januari 1984, kedua negara ingin sekali memiliki hubungan yang baik. Hal ini sudah disampaikan dalam kunjungan resmi Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ke Jakarta pada Oktober 1984 dimana Presiden Suharto dan Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah bersepakat untuk menjalankan hubungan kedua negara dengan baik atas semangat persahabatan dan persaudaraan antar sesama saudara serumpun. Hingga tahun 1998 Indonesia dan Brunei Darussalam melakukan kerjasama dalam berbagai bidang seperti politik, ekonomi, pendidikan, sosial dan penerangan. Bagi Indonesia, hubungan diplomatik dengan Brunei Darussalam memiliki sebuah keberhasilan dimana kedua negara optimis untuk bersahabat, Indonesia mendapatkan pinjaman tanpa bunga dari Brunei hingga membantu Indonesia dalam menghadapi Krisis Moneter 1997-1998 dan Indonesia dapat bersaing dalam pasar Brunei Darussalam. Keberhasilan hubungan diplomatik diantara kedua negara juga terasa dalam hubungan pribadi antara Presiden Suharto dengan Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Rasa persaudaraan dan kekeluargaan terasa dalam pertemuan resmi maupun tidak resmi yang dilakukan oleh Presiden Suharto dengan Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Setelah Presiden Suharto tidak menjabat sebagai Presiden Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam tetap menjalankan hubungan baik dengan Indonesia bahkan terus meningkatkan hubungan tersebut. Terhadap Bapak Suharto, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah mempertahankan hubungan baiknya hingga meninggalnya Bapak Suharto pada Januari 2008. The purpose of this research is to describe the development of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam during President Suharto's era which began after Brunei became independent on January 1, 1984 until President Suharto resigned in May 1998. This study uses historical methods to discuss diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam during the New Order era. The historical method is a research method that uses systematic methods, procedures or techniques in accordance with historical principles and rules to produce historical writings. The historical method has four stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The result of this research is that after the independence of Brunei Darussalam in January 1984, the two countries really wanted to have good relations. This was conveyed during Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's official visit to Jakarta in October 1984 where President Suharto and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah agreed to carry out the relations between the two countries properly in the spirit of friendship and brotherhood among fellow allied brothers. Until 1998 Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam collaborated in various fields such as politics, economics, education, social and information. For Indonesia, diplomatic relations with Brunei Darussalam have a success where the two countries are optimistic to be friends, Indonesia gets interest-free loans from Brunei to help Indonesia in dealing with the 1997-1998 Monetary Crisis and Indonesia can compete in the Brunei Darussalam market. The success of diplomatic relations between the two countries was also felt in the personal relationship between President Suharto and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. A sense of brotherhood and kinship was felt in the official and unofficial meetings held by President Suharto with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. After President Suharto did not serve as President of Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam continued to maintain good relations with Indonesia and even continued to improve these relations. Toward Mr Suharto, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah maintained good relations until the death of Mr Suharto in January 2008.
