Abstract

Free radicals are molecule or molecular fragment that have one or more unpaired electron (Valko et al., 2006). Oxidative damage to DNA molecules is one of many factors that caused degenerative diseases such as diabetes, cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease. (Poorna et al., 2013). This research aimed to measure the antioxidant activity of pranajiwa seed extract and its toxicity. This research uses an experimental method with completely randomized design of 2 control groups (positive and negative) and 4 research groups consisting of 10 ppm, 30 ppm, 40 ppm and 60 ppm. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with α = 0,05 and probability test unit were done to measure the LC50 value. The results showed that pranajiwa (Euchresta horsfieldii (Lesch.) Benn.) seed extract has a radical scavenging activity with scavenging percentage of 30,66 ± 0,99%, which means pranajiwa seeds have a very strong radical scavenging activity. Besides that, pranajiwa (Euchresta horsfieldii (Lesch.) Benn.) seeds extract has a LC50 value of 3,240 ppm, because of that pranajiwa seeds extract is categorized as highly toxic. Therefore, due to its high toxicity value, pranajiwa seeds are potential as anticancer candidates.
