Abstract

***** This study analyzes the cultural identity of immigrant children represented by Yoon in a set of children’s picture book trilogy written by Helen Recorvits. Targeting children aged 6 to 12 years, the picture books which are the source of this study consist of books entitled My Name is Yoon (2003), Yoon and The Christmas Mitten (2006), and Yoon and The Jade Bracelet (2008) with each book containing a total of 30 pages. The three books depict Yoon's process of cultural adjustment followed by the development of her identity as a little immigrant. Being an immigrant, she must adjust to her new cultural environment and not only discover, but also learn to accept her new identity. As the main character of the entire story, this trilogy shows Yoon going through several stages of developing a cultural identity before finally accept herself as a Korean-American. In descriptive qualitative method, the narrative texts of each book is analyzed using Todorov's narrative structure theory, while Kress and Leeuwen’s visual grammar is utilized for visual interpretations. The setting of place is investigated using Hunt’s space and place and the study of animal symbols is carried out through the ecopsychology approach. All of these research elements are related to the development of the main character's cultural identity which is examined using the R/CIDM theory proposed by Sue and Sue. The results of this study indicate that there is compatibility and synchronization between research elements and the issue of cultural identity of immigrant children represented through the character of Yoon.
