Abstract

Penelitian ini menguji peran gender yang dialami oleh tiga karakter utama dalam novel Margaret Atwood, The Testaments (2019), dan mengeksplorasi strategi yang digunakan untuk menghadapi tantangan dan mengatasi norma-norma gender dalam sistem yang menindas. Analisis ini mengadopsi metodologi kualitatif, berfokus pada interpretasi teks dan perangkat fiksi, seperti konflik-konflik tiga karakter perempuan utama dalam novel Margaret Atwood, The Testaments. Data penelitian ini berupa kata-kata, frasa, dan kalimat. Data untuk penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui langkah-langkah berikut: membaca buku secara cermat beberapa kali, mengidentifikasi data yang berkaitan dengan masalah peran gender, menginventarisasi data, mengategorikan data, memilih data, dan akhirnya menuliskan data ke dalam lampiran. Analisis dilakukan menggunakan teori peran sosial dan hubungan kekuasaan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis strategi-strategi yang digunakan, terutama antara Bibi Lydia, Agnes Jemima, dan Daisy dalam mencapai tujuan mereka melawan kekuasaan Gilead. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap karakter menerapkan strategi yang berbeda dalam menjalankan kekuasaan untuk mencapai tujuan yang sama. Bibi Lydia, sebagai contoh, menggunakan kekuasaannya sebagai bibi yang diam-diam menjadi informan bagi organisasi Mayday untuk menggoyahkan kekuasaan Gilead. Begitu pula, karakter Agnes memilih untuk tidak mematuhi norma keluarganya dan menjadi bibi untuk bekerja sama dengan Bibi Lydia. Sementara itu, karakter Daisy bekerja dengan operasi Mayday di Kanada dan menyusup ke Gilead sebagai penyerbu dengan misi untuk menghancurkan Gilead. ***** This study examines gender roles experienced by the three prominent characters in Margaret Atwood's novel The Testaments (2019) and explores the strategies used to face the challenge and overcome the gender norms within the oppressive system. The analysis adopts a qualitative methodology, focusing on the interpretation of text and fictional devices, as in the three major female characters’ conflicts in Margaret Atwood’s novel The Testaments. The data of the study are in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The data for this study were gathered by doing the following steps: attentively reading the book several times, identifying data relating to gender roles concerns, inventorying the data, categorizing the data, choosing the data, and finally reporting the data into appendices. The analysis is done through the lens of social role and power relation theory. The purpose of the study is to analyses the strategies used, particularly between Aunt Lydia, Agnes Jemima, and Daisy of winning their objective against the Gilead regime. The findings show that each character implements different strategies in imposing power for the same goals. As for Aunt Lydia, using her power as an aunt, she secretly became the informant for the Mayday organization to undermine the power of Gilead. Similarly, Agnes' character chooses not to obey her family's norms and instead becomes an aunt to work with Aunt Lydia. Meanwhile Daisy's character works with the Mayday operation in Canada and enters Gilead as an invader on a mission to destroy Gilead.
