Abstract

Artanti, Farahita Mufidah. 2023. Translating Metaphor by Machine and Human: Newmark’s Approach. A Thesis: Jakarta, English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This study aims to identify the translation procedure used by Google Translate, U-Dictionary, Kamus Inggris (Kamusku), and human translator in translating metaphor found in Edgar Allan Poe’s three short stories entitled Hop Frog, A Descent into The Maelstrom and The Fall of the House of Usher and later compare the translation procedure used by Google Translate, U-Dictionary, Kamus Inggris (Kamusku) or machine translations and human translator. The categories of selected metaphor are also identified. The method of the study is qualitative-descriptive with employing the metaphor translation procedure theory proposed by Newmark in his book A Textbook of Translation. The result of the study shows the most identified category of metaphor is stock or standard metaphor. As for the most used translation procedure by machines translations (Google Translate, U-Dictionary, Kamus Inggris (Kamusku)) is reproducing the same essence in the TL, out of 40 metaphors, Google translate used the procedure for 21 times, U-Dictionary used it for 19 times, and Kamus Inggris (Kamusku) used it for 20 times. While most used translation procedure by human translator is replacing SL image with a standard TL image which used for 11 times because human translator has a rather equal distribution of the usage of translation procedure. The differences of the utilization of translation procedure between machine translations and human translations are caused by the goal of translating the metaphor, the distribution of each translation procedure, and the utilization of the procedure ‘deleting the metaphor’. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh Google Translate, U-Dictionary, Kamus Inggris (Kamusku), dan penerjemah manusia dalam menerjemahkan metafora yang ditemukan dalam tiga cerpen oleh Edgar Allan Poe berjudul Hop Frog, A Descent into The Maelstrom dan The Fall of House of Usher dan kemudian membandingkan prosedur penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh Google Translate, U-Dictionary, Kamus Inggris (Kamusku) atau mesin penerjemah dan penerjemah manusia. Kategori metafora dari metafora terpilih juga akan diidentifikasi. Metode penelitian ini adalah kualitatif-deskriptif dengan menggunakan teori prosedur penerjemahan metafora yang dikemukakan oleh Newmark dalam bukunya A Textbook of Translation. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kategori metafora yang paling banyak teridentifikasi adalah metafora standar, yaitu sebanyak 17 metafora. Kemudian untuk prosedur penerjemahan yang paling banyak digunakan oleh mesin terjemahan (Google Translate, U-Dictionary, Kamus Inggris (Kamusku)) mereproduksi citra yang sama di TSa, dari 40 metafora, Google translate menggunakan prosedurnya sebanyak 21 kali, U-Dictionary menggunakannya sebanyak 19 kali, dan Kamus Inggris (Kamusku) menggunakannya sebanyak 20 kali. Sedangkan prosedur penerjemahan yang paling banyak digunakan oleh penerjemah manusia adalah mengganti citra dalam BSu dengan citra standar yang berterima dalam BSa yang digunakan sebanyak 11 kali karena penerjemah manusia memiliki distribusi penggunaan prosedur penerjemahan yang lebih imbang daripada mesin penerjemah.
