Abstract

***** Foreign language speaking anxiety can have a negative impact on language learning outcomes and potentially reduce students’ motivation, participation, and performance in language learning. However, it receives little attention in bilingual classroom contexts in Indonesian secondary schools. This study investigates foreign language speaking anxiety in bilingual classroom students in terms of the levels and the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English. The mixed-method explanatory sequential was employed as the research design. Thirty-six, the whole population of the 8th grade bilingual program of SMPI Al-Azhar 12 Rawamangun are selected as the study participants. Horwitz et al. (1989)’s FLCAS questionnaire was employed to identify students who have experienced anxiety in their learning of speaking skills. Then, students with high anxiety levels were engaged in semistructured interviews to obtain more rich data on factors contributing to their anxiety. The findings reveal that the majority of students are of moderate levels of speaking anxiety, with various learner-internal and external factors playing a role in their anxiety levels. Learner-internal factors included fear of negative evaluation, fear of making mistakes, students’ lack of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation knowledge, and fear of teacher-initiated questions. Learner-external factors included the influence of peers, the bilingual classroom environment, interaction with native speakers, the influence of teachers, and speaking activities. The findings have implications for classroom teaching and learning processes, and recommendations are provided for creating a supportive language learning environment that fosters students’ language development and helps alleviate their anxiety.
