Abstract

Studi ini fokus pada bagaimana politik tubuh model plus-size direpresentasikan dalam sampul majalah Cosmopolitan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki praktik-praktik politik tubuh yang muncul di sampul majalah Cosmopolitan melalui model plus-size. Menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitis, penelitian ini menganalisis unsur-unsur teks visual dan tertulis dari tiga sampul majalah Cosmopolitan yang dipilih. Teori-teori untuk penelitian ini terdiri semiotik sosial oleh Gunther Kress dan Van Leeuwen untuk menganalisis teks-teks visual, sistemik fungsional linguistik oleh M.A.K Halliday untuk menganalisis teks-teks tertulis, dan teori politik tubuh oleh Michel Foucault. Praktek-praktek politik tubuh dapat dilihat dari pakaian, gerak tubuh, dan sampul majalah. Elemen-elemen lain seperti warna, jarak sosial, dan sudut disajikan untuk melibatkan pembaca dan model plus-size untuk membuat mereka percaya bahwa cantik tidak dinilai dari ukuran. Majalah Cosmopolitan menghadirkan model plus-size sebagai sampul majalah untuk mendefinisikan kembali standar kecantikan yang telah melekat pada masyarakat sejak lama. This study focuses on how is body politics of plus-size model represented in Cosmopolitan magazine’s cover. The purpose of this study is to investigate the practices of body politics that appear in Cosmopolitan magazine’s cover through the plus-size model. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this study analyzed the elements of visual and written texts from three selected cover of Cosmopolitan magazine. The theories for this study comprise social semiotics by Gunther Kress and Van Leeuwen to analyze the visual texts, systemic functional linguistic by M.A.K Halliday to analyze the written texts, and the body politics theory by Michel Foucault. The practices of body politics can be seen from the outfit, gesture, and the coverline of the magazine. Other elements such as color, social distances, and angles are presented to engage the viewers and the plus-size model to make them believe that beauty has no size. Cosmopolitan magazine presented the plus-size model as the cover of the magazine to redefine the beauty standards which have been stick to society for a long time.
