Abstract
***** This thesis examines the development of cooperatives in Indonesia, which are associations of individuals or groups with limited resources that aim to do business together. There are different types of co-operatives that focus on different sectors such as production, consumption, credit, services, and local community development. The co-operative movement in Indonesia has faced challenges due to political influence, but has been supported by government policies and regulations since the 1945 Constitution. The success and positive impact of cooperatives are influenced by market position, skilled managers, capital, efficient resource utilisation, technical capabilities, risk distribution, and adaptability. The principles of co-operatives in Indonesia prioritise member welfare, equality, and democratic decision-making. Co-operatives aim to improve economic and social welfare and contribute to national economic resilience. While co-operatives have played an important role in improving farmers' welfare and supporting the rural economy, there are concerns about government control. Cooperatives in Indonesia strive to go beyond profit-seeking by collaborating with stakeholders and following the principles of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. Despite facing challenges such as competition, limited resources and innovation, and limited access to capital, cooperatives continue to support small businesses and make a positive contribution to the national economy. The result of this research study is how Mohammad Hatta's co-operative, which is an implication of the people's economy, has succeeded in bringing the Indonesian economy slowly back to its feet after it had slumped during the economic crisis at the end of the New Order government.
