Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana karakteristik narsisme Dorian Gray dari novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” ditunjukkan, dan untuk mengidentifikasi penyebab yang mendasari narsismenya dengan menganalisis hubungan dan interaksi Dorian dengan orang tua dan teman sebayanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori psikoanalisis Kohut tentang narsisme dalam psikologi diri untuk mempelajari narsisme pada karakter utama “The Picture of Dorian Gay”, sebuah novel yang ditulis oleh Oscar Wilde. Data penelitian ini meliputi teks, bagian, dialog, dan narasi yang dikumpulkan dari novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” yang ditulis oleh Oscar Wilde. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa narsisme Dorian seperti obsesi terhadap kecantikan, kemegahan, keegoisan, dan kemudaan ditunjukkan melalui sifat-sifatnya terhadap teman sebaya dan orang yang penting baginya. Penyebab yang mendasari narsisme Dorian adalah trauma masa kecil dan pengasuhan yang kasar. Hubungan interpersonal dan interaksi sosial Dorian Gray dengan orang tua dan teman sebayanya juga berkontribusi terhadap perkembangan narsismenya. **** This thesis aims to analyze how narcissism traits of Dorian Gray from “The Picture of Dorian Gray” novel are shown and to identify the underlying causes of his narcissism by analyzing Dorian’s relations and interactions with his parents and peer. This research employs Kohut’s psychoanalysis theory of narcissism in self-psychology to study the narcissism in the main male character of “The Picture of Dorian Gay”, a novel written by Oscar Wilde. The data of this study includes texts, passages, dialogues, and narrations are collected from “The Picture of Dorian Gray” novel written by Oscar Wilde. This study found that Dorian’s narcissism such as the obsession of beauty, grandiosity, selfishness, and youth are shown through his traits towards his peer and significant other. The underlying causes of Dorian’s narcissism are childhood trauma and abusive upbringing. The interpersonal relations and social interaction of Dorian Gray with his parents and peer also contribute to the development of his narcissism.
