Abstract

This research aims to identify the forms and function of bunmyaku shiji in a pragmatic study of the novel based on Iori's theory (2001) and the relation between the use of bunmyaku shiji and the pragmatic context in bunmyaku shiji sentences based on Yule's theory (1996). This research is a qualitative research with descriptive results. The data is collected through library studies, not-involved in conversation observation technique, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis is conducted using Miles and Huberman's method (2018), in the form of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the researches found 37 data in the form of bunmyaku shiji sentences. 14 data are bunmyaku shiji in dialogue sentences, 11 data are bunmyaku shiji in text, 9 data are bunmyaku shiji that accept and express agreement with the previous statement, and 3 data are bunmyaku shiji that refer to the following sentence. The data indicated a significant predominance of the particle そ. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to build intricate plots that span different time periods, bridge various character viewpoints, and cultivate a sense of mystery. Moreover, bunmyaku shiji そ is instrumental in organizing information coherently, allowing readers to navigate the narrative seamlessly and grasp its deeper implications.
