Abstract

The research method used in this thesis is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques such as in-depth and informal interviews, literature studies, and observation. This study has eight informants, namely: Bang Aswir, Pak Lubis, and Annisa Seza as key informants, then Pak Gilang, Raka Nizam, Fikri, Tengil, and Shadia Kansha as supporting informants, and Max Suriaganda as triangulation informant. The concepts used in this research are commercialization, asynchrony, and consumption. Based on the research findings, both thrift shop sellers and consumers share the view that the increasing price of thrift shop goods is caused by various factors, including: commercialization through social media, mass media, and the internet, the supply of thrift shop goods that can’t keep up with the demand of consumers, and the thrift shop industry itself, which is currently approaching its maturity. For a long time, thrift shop consumers are marginalized in the consumer, cultural, and channel sub-systems. Marginalization of long time thrift shop consumers in the three sub-systems mentioned above are caused by four forms of asynchronism, such as: geographical asynchronism, institutional asynchronism, asynchronism of different social groups, and individual asynchronism.
