Abstract
************************************************************ The fabrication and characterization of coconut shell briquettes with tapioca flour binder has been carried out with various concentrations of tapioca flour 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9%. All samples of coconut shell briquettes were dried for 30, 60, and 90 minutes. Coconut shell briquette samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy – Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), compression test, and burning rate test to analyze the effect of variations in tapioca flour concentration on the mechanical properties and burning rate of coconut shell briquettes. It can be confirmed from the SEM-EDX results that the content of coconut shell briquettes is dominated by elements of carbon (C), oxygen (O), and potassium (K). The FTIR results show the absorption of the O-H and C=C groups. From the compression test and the burning rate test, it can be seen that variations in the concentration of tapioca flour affect the mechanical properties and burning rate of coconut shell briquettes. The highest compressive strength value was owned by coconut shell briquettes with a concentration of 9% tapioca flour with a drying time of 30 minutes, 1.63 MPa. The burning rate in this sample is the slowest, 0.060 gr/minutes.
