Abstract

Kata Kunci: Industri Film Indonesia, Idealisme, Perfini, Pragmatisme, Sinema Komersial, Usmar Ismail.***** This study examines Usmar Ismail's pragmatic approach in developing the Indonesian national film industry. He refused to compromise with commercial aspects and focused on making films that were full of meaningful values. However, the economic pressures he faced in the following period forced him to be more pragmatic, combining idealism and commercial aspects for the sake of the sustainability of film production, this was due to the tastes of the Indonesian people who preferred light entertainment and entertainment. Nevertheless, his enthusiasm for his work never waned. Furthermore, the unstable political and social conditions in the 1960s and the tight competition with foreign films further hampered his activities in the film industry. Usmar Ismail, who had been involved in politics, tried to concentrate on film again but various obstacles made him increasingly limited.
