Abstract

ABSTRACT Niken Purnamasari. Evaluation of Ex Situ Incubation Method on the Quality of Neonatal Hawksbill Turtles in Harapan Island, Seribu Islands National Park. Thesis, Biology Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Jakarta State University. Hawksbill turtles are a type of turtle that is spread throughout Indonesia, one of which is in the Seribu Islands. This study aimed to determine the effect of incubation methods on the success of egg hatching, temperature differences, and the effect of incubation methods on the quality of hawksbill turtle hatchlings. This study used a quasi-experiment to differentiate the success of hatching and the quality of hawksbill turtle neonatal between semi-natural and artificial incubation (polystyrene buckets). The parameters measured were hatching success, nest temperature, morphometry, locomotion (body turning speed and walking speed) of hawksbill turtles. The results showed that the percentage of hatching success tended to be higher in artificial incubation (32%) compared to semi-natural incubation (11%), there was a significant difference between incubation methods in the parameters of hatching success having a value (asymp.sig) 0.000 <0.05. The temperature of semi-natural incubation had a lower temperature (29℃) than artificial incubation (31℃). Hatchlings that were artificially incubated had larger morphometric dimensions, namely carapace length (3.86 cm ± 0.042), carapace width (3.20 cm ± 0.073), body length (6.58 cm ± 0.065), body weight (11.25 grams ± 0.198), compared to semi-natural incubation which was smaller in carapace length (3.76 cm ± 0.037), carapace width (2.83 cm ± 0.111), body length (6.30 cm ± 0.047), body weight (10.60 grams ± 0.141). The body turning speed was significantly faster in artificial incubation (5.3 seconds ± 2.091) compared to semi-natural incubation (39.20 seconds ± 2.732), while walking speed was faster in artificial incubation (1.13 minutes ± 0.085) compared to semi-natural incubation (2.39 minutes ± 0.246). Keywords: Hatching, temperature, morphometrics, locomotion, hawksbill turtles.
