Abstract

This study discusses the phenomenon of uang panai’ in the Bugis and Makassar communities and its relation to marriages at the Religious Affairs Office (KUA). The aim of this research is to understand the role of uang panai’ in KUA marriages and how the community perceives marriages without traditional customs. Using Malinowski's bridewealth theory and a qualitative case study approach, this research examines the wedding traditions of the Bugis and Makassar communities, the role of KUA, and the views of the millennial generation. The findings show that marriages at KUA are performed solely for official registration, while traditional wedding receptions still require uang panai’. The community views marriages without uang panai’ as shameful (siri’), as it is closely linked to cultural pride. If the groom is unable to meet the uang panai’ amount set by the bride's family, the marriage may fail to take place, with the risk of silariang (elopement). This study concludes that despite modern trends, the tradition of uang panai’ still plays a significant role in Bugis and Makassar wedding practices, and KUA marriages do not eliminate the presence of this custom.
