Abstract

Incarcerated drug-using mothers face many challenges in providing love and stability for their children, which has a huge psychological impact on them. This paper takes a qualitative approach, using the case study method. Participants consisted of mothers of drug offenders who have children under the age of 17, as well as prison managers. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews, then evaluated thematically. The data showed that the mothers experienced significant psychological and emotional impacts, especially in the first and second weeks of detention. However, by the third week, they began to adjust to prison conditions. Guilt and emotions of ineffective motherhood emerged, as did sadness and stress. Nonetheless, love and longing for their children were the main drivers for their recovery. From this study, it can be concluded that although the mothers experienced significant emotional difficulties, emotional support and improved communication facilities in prison were key factors in helping them maintain relationships with their children and improve their psychological well-being.
