Abstract

***** The representation of women in strategic corporate leadership has increasingly become a focal point in the discourse on equality and the effectiveness of modern organizations. This study aims to examine the influence of women’s leadership on the performance of non-financial companies in Indonesia by employing linear, dynamic, and non-linear model approaches. Women’s leadership is measured using eight indicators that reflect the presence, position, managerial expertise, and experience of female leaders in the board of directors and board of commissioners. These indicators include the presence of a female CEO (WCEO), educational background of the female CEO (WCEOE), tenure of the female CEO (WCEOT), proportion of women on the board of directors (WBOD), female as president commissioner (WPCom), educational background of female commissioners (WComE), tenure of female commissioners (WComT), and proportion of women on the board of commissioners (WBOC). Company performance is measured using Return on Net Assets (RONA). The study utilizes an unbalanced panel dataset of non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange over the period 2013–2022, comprising 3,270 firm-year observations. The analysis is conducted using fixed effects models, dynamic models (System GMM), and quadratic modelsto identify potential non-linearrelationships. The estimation results show that, collectively, all women’s leadership variables significantly influence firm performance across all models. However, individually, only some variables have a significant effect. The proportion of women on the board of directors (WBOD) shows an inverted U-shaped non-linear relationship with RONA, peaking at 27.11%. The presence of a female president commissioner (WPCom) has a significant influence in the non-linear model, while the presence of women on the board of commissioners (WBOC) has a positive effect in the linear model. Meanwhile, WCEO, WCEOE, WCEOT, WComE, and WComT do not show significant effects. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of complexity theory to analyze women’s leadership through the simultaneous application of three model approaches (linear, non-linear, and dynamic), as well as the use of a large-scale, long-term panel dataset to reveal non-linear relationships and critical thresholds within corporate leadership structures.
