Abstract
This research aims to explain the history of the struggle of the Special Guerrilla Troops, consisting of former Japanese soldiers, during the Indonesian War of Independence on Java Island from 1945-1950. This research also examines the background and motivations that drove these Japanese soldiers to join the Indonesian resistance against the Dutch colonialists. The method used is historical research with a descriptive narrative approach through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historical writing. The results indicate that these troops were formed due to conditions after World War II, when some Japanese soldiers chose to stay and join the Indonesian resistance rather than return to their homeland. Their primary motivations included good relations with the local population, a strong adherence to bushido, and marriages with Indonesian citizens. The Special Guerrilla Troops were actively involved in various guerrilla battles in the East Java region, especially around Blitar and Malang, and played an important role in the struggle to maintain independence until the achievement of a ceasefire with the Dutch in 1949. Through this research, the author hopes to provide a deeper understanding of the contribution of former Japanese soldiers in the history of the Indonesian independence struggle, as well as enrich the historiography of Indonesian military history.
