Abstract
Kata Kunci: Sadfishing, Regulasi Emosi, Self-Esteem, Emerging Adulthood ***** The phenomenon of sadfishing, or the tendency to excessively express sadness on social media, is quite common among individuals in emerging adulthood. This emotional expression is closely related to individuals' ability to regulate emotions and their perception of self-worth or self-esteem. This study aims to examine the influence of emotion regulation and self-esteem on sadfishing behavior among emerging adults. A quantitative approach was employed through a survey of 254 respondents aged 18–29 who are active social media users. The instruments used included the Social Media Sadfishing Questionnaire (SMSQ) by Shabahang et al. (2023), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) by Garnefski & Kraaij (2006), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) by Rosenberg (1965). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results showed that, simultaneously, emotion regulation and self-esteem significantly influence sadfishing behavior. However, partially, only certain emotion regulation dimensions namely self-blame, other-blame, positive refocusing, and refocus on planning showed significant effects. Meanwhile, self-esteem was found to have no contribution to sadfishing behavior. These findings indicate that sadfishing is more strongly influenced by how individuals regulate their emotions than by their self-perception. Therefore, it is important to encourage the use of adaptive emotion regulation strategies to reduce sadfishing behavior among individuals in emerging adulthood.
