Abstract
This study analyzes grammatical errors in narrative essays written by Join AIESEC 2022 applicants at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through document analysis of ten applicants’ essays and semi structures interviews. Grammatical errors were classified using Dulay’s Surface Strategy Taxonomy approach (omission, addition, misformation, and misordering), and the causes were analyzed based on Brown’s approach (interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategies). The findings revealed that misformation errors were the most common (71%), followed by omission (20%), addition (7%), and misordering (2%). The causes were primarily linked to interference from the first language, grammatical rule confusion, learning environment and strategy use. The study highlights a disconnect between students’ formal grammar instruction and practical writing application. It suggests the need for more contextualized grammar instruction and increased linguistic awareness to enhance student’s writing ability, especially in real-world context like essay for application. ***** Penelitian ini menganalisis kesalahan grammatikal dalam esai naratif yang ditulis oleh peserta Join AIESEC 2022 di Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui analisis dokumen terhadap sepuluh esai peserta serta wawancara semi-terstruktur. Kesalahan gramatikal dapat diklasifiksikan berdasarkan pendekatan Surface Strategy Taxonomy dari Dulay (omission, addition, misformation, dan misordering), sementara penyebab kesalahan gramatikal dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan Brown (interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategies). Temuan menunjukan bahwa kesalahan misformation adalah yang paling dominan (71%), diikuti oleh omission (20%), addition (7%), dan misordering (2%). Penyebab utama dari kesalahan ini berasal dari pengaruh bahasa pertama, kebingungan aturan tata bahasa, lingkungan belajar, dan penggunaan strategi komunikasi. Studi ini mengungkap adanya kesenjangan antara pengajaran tata bahasa secara formal dan penerapannya dalam penulisan praktis. Oleh karena itu, disarankan perlunya pembelajaran tata bahasa yang lebih kontekstual dan peningkatan kesadaran linguistik untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa, khususnya dalam konteks dunia nyata seperti penulisan esai untuk lamaran.
