Abstract

Untuk mendukung analisis, penelitian ini juga mengidentifikasi pola kolokasi gramatikal seperti “we must”, “in my capacity”, dan “during the conflict”, serta kolokasi leksikal seperti gelar kehormatan “His Majesty The King”. Di antara ekspresi tersebut, kata ganti “we” muncul sebagai ekspresi deiksis yang paling sering digunakan dan sering kali dipasangkan dengan verba modal “must”, yang membentuk makna tanggung jawab inklusif dan urgensi. Pola-pola ini membantu memperjelas fungsi referensial deiksis serta memperkuat posisi diplomatik pembicara, solidaritas terhadap penyintas, dan upaya advokasi dalam konteks politik. ***** The application of deictic expressions in political speeches plays a crucial role in shaping the speaker’s stance, identity, ideology, and strategic messaging. This study examines the use of deictic expression in The Duchess of Edinburgh’s Speech at the international conference “Restoration of the Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Survivors’ Rights” in Ukraine. This study aims to identify the types of deictic expressions used in the speech and to explore their collocational patterns to support contextual and co-textual interpretation. The data were collected from all utterances that contain deictic expressions in the official speech transcript published by The Royal Family’s official website. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, drawing upon Stephen Levinson’s (1983) theory of deixis, as well as collocation theories proposed by Benson et al. (2010). The findings reveal that all five types of deixis, person, temporal, spatial, discourse, and social, appear in the speech, with a total of 90 occurrences. Person deixis is the most dominant type of deixis in the speech, with 56% appearance, followed by discourse deixis (19%), time deixis (11%), social deixis (9%), and place deixis (5%). To further support the analysis, the study also identifies grammatical collocations such as “we must”, “in my capacity”, and “during the conflict”, along with lexical collocations such as the honorific “His Majesty The King”. Among these, the pronoun “we” appears as the most frequent deictic expression and is commonly paired with the modal verb “must,” which constructs inclusive responsibility and urgency. These patterns help clarify the referential functions of deixis and reinforce the speaker’s diplomatic stance, solidarity with survivors, and advocacy efforts within the political context.
