Abstract

***** High school students in Indonesia have underdeveloped critical thinking skills. However, low critical thinking skills have a negative impact on academic achievement because students become less able to analyze and evaluate information effectively. As a solution, innovative media is needed to enhance students' critical thinking skills in learning. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of a virtual reality laboratory (VRL) on students' critical thinking skills regarding the topic of salt hydrolysis. This is a quantitative study using a quasi-experimental design in the form of a nonequivalent (pre-test and post-test) control-group design. The sample in this study consisted of 72 students in the 2024-2025 academic year from two classes, selected using purposive sampling. The experimental and control classes were randomly assigned using a coin toss method. Students' critical thinking was measured using the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale (CTDS) questionnaire with a 1-5 Likert scale. The CTDS consists of 11 statements, including 7 statements related to critical openness and 4 statements related to reflective skepticism to measure critical thinking among students in the experimental and control classes. The experimental class conducted learning on the topic of salt hydrolysis using a VR laboratory, while the control class used a practical video. Quantitative data showed that critical thinking among students in both classes improved. However, the improvement in critical thinking among students in the experimental class showed a greater effect (Cohen’s d = 1.424) compared to the control class at the end of the learning process. Therefore, it can be concluded that the VR laboratory is effective in improving critical thinking among students on the topic of salt hydrolysis.
