Abstract

**** This study explores how humour is translated into Indonesian in the subtitles of the American television series Modern Family (Season 11). It focuses on identifying the types of humour used in the series, the translation strategies applied, and how acceptable the translations are to Indonesian viewers. The study uses Raphaelson-West’s (1989) classification of humour and Gottlieb’s (1992) subtitling strategies and Nababan et al.’s (2012) model for assessing translation quality. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the data consists of 40 humourous utterances taken from the series. The findings show that universal humour appears most frequently (50%), followed by cultural humour (35%) and linguistic humour (15%). Out of the 10 strategies proposed by Gottlieb, 7 were found in the subtitles, with transfer being the most used, especially for universal and cultural humour. Other strategies like paraphrase, condensation, and resignation were used when the humour could not be directly translated. To assess how well the subtitles were accepted, a questionnaire was given to 26 English Literature students. The findings show that transfer, resignation, and deletion were mostly considered acceptable. However, strategies like paraphrase received mixed opinions depending on the type of humour. The study concludes that translating humour requires not only language accuracy but also an understanding of cultural context and flexibility in choosing the right strategy. This research helps increase understanding of how humour can be successfully translated in audiovisual media, especially across cultures.
