Abstract
**** This study analyzes the translation of metaphors in the novel Gadis Kretek and its English version, Cigarette Girl, using Reiss’s functionalist model combined with Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors (structural, ontological, orientational) and assess how semantic, lexical, grammatical, and stylistic elements are preserved in the conceptual metaphor translation. The results show that Cigarette Girl is relatively successful in maintaining conceptual meanings, particularly those related to kretek, memory, and family. However, there is a significant decline in diction and narrative style. The original novel employs shifting perspectives, creating emotional depth and narrative layers, while the translation consistently uses a third-person limited viewpoint, reducing its artistic nuance. As a form-focused text, Gadis Kretek requires fidelity not only to meaning but also to style. Thus, although the translation conveys cultural essence, it does not fully replicate the literary experience intended for the original readers.
