Abstract
***** This study aims to inventory the types of ferns found in Wadio Village, Nabire, Central Papua, and examine their use by the community based on the economic botany categories according to Cook (1995). The study was conducted using exploratory methods from July 7–27, 2024, through fern specimen collection, interviews with 40 informants, and descriptive data analysis. The results revealed 17 species of ferns, consisting of 1 species of Lycopodiopsida and 16 species of Polypodiopsida. All fern species are locally recognized by the community, but only a small number are utilized. Five categories of fern use were identified: social uses (traditional ceremonies and ornamental plants), food (vegetables), animal food (pig feed), material (food wrapping and hut roofs), and medicine (traditional medicine). Utilized plant organs include young leaves, entire leaves, entire plants, sori, and rhizomes. These results indicate that fern utilization in Wadio Village is dominated by traditional practices, although there are indications of modern uses, such as potted ornamental plants. This research makes an important contribution to documenting local knowledge and the economic potential of ferns in Central Papua.
