Abstract

Usaha batik di Kauman memasuki babak baru setelah kemundurannya pada akhir abad ke-20. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dinamika usaha batik di Kauman Surakarta tahun 2006-2016. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah, terdiri dari empat tahapan yaitu heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Sumber primer yang digunakan berupa wawancara pengusaha batik dan surat kabar sezaman, sedangkan sumber sekunder berasal dari buku, artikel, dan penelitian terdahulu yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan usaha batik di Kauman mulai bangkit kembali tahun 2006. Puncak kebangkitannya terjadi setelah batik mendapat pengakuan sebagai warisan budaya tak benda dunia oleh UNESCO tahun 2009, yang ditandai dengan keberadaan 80 unit usaha pada 2011. Perkembangan ini tidak terlepas dari berbagai faktor yang meliputi sikap aktif-adaptif pengusaha terhadap perubahan selera konsumen, kemudahan akses bahan baku, strategi harga, serta peran Pemerintah Kota Surakarta. Namun, usaha batik ditempa persoalan antara lain maraknya batik dari China, ketidakstabilan harga bahan baku, dan regenerasi pembatik yang memicu pergeseran arah dan penurunan jumlah unit usaha. Meski demikian, usaha batik di Kauman tetap bertahan dan memberikan dampak ekonomi bagi masyarakat setempat terutama sektor perdagangan dan transportasi. ***** The batik enterprises in Kauman entered a new phase following their decline in the late 20th century. This study aims to examine the dynamics of batik enterprises in Kauman, Surakarta, during the period from 2006 to 2016. The research applies the historical method, which consists of four stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources include interviews with batik entrepreneurs and contemporary newspapers, while secondary sources consist of books, academic articles, and relevant previous studies. The findings reveal that batik enterprises in Kauman began to experience a revival in 2006. This resurgence peaked after batik was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, marked by the presence of 80 active business units in 2011. Several key factors contributed to this growth, including the proactive and adaptive responses of entrepreneurs to shifting consumer preferences, improved access to raw materials, pricing strategies, and support from the Surakarta City Government. However, the batik enterprises also faced challenges, such as the influx of Chinese batik products, fluctuating raw material prices, and limited regeneration of artisans, which led to shifts in orientation and a decline in the number of business units. Despite these challenges, the batik enterprises in Kauman have sustained their presence and continued to play a vital role in supporting the local economy, especially in trade and transportation.
