Abstract
***** This research stems from the persistent prevelance of discrimination amidst social diversity. Formal education remains limited in introducing social diversity, resulting in several anti-discrimination movements addresing this issue through various methods and approaches. One such approach is through the reading and discussion of diverse books conducted The Diversitea Book Club. This research has three objectives: first, to explain the background of The Diversitea’s approach to diversity. Second, to explain the process by which The Diversitea addresses diversity issues. Last, to explain the impact of The Diversitea Book Club’s initiatives. This research was conducted using qualitative approach and a case study method. Data collection was conducted through interviews with six key informants and two triangulation informants. Key informant consisted of three daily administrators and three active participants of The Diversitea Book Club. In addition to interviews, other data were obtained through observation, documentation, and literature review. Observations were conducted from August 2024, and further data collection toke place in June-August, and November 2025 at Taman Langsat, Quarte Cafe, and Zoom Meeting. The Research results show that The Diversitea Book Club raises diversity issues and becomes a New Social Movements, based on its founder’s love of diverse books. Their love of diverse books is also influenced by the complexity of their identities. Furthermore, there are three processes carried out by The Diversitea Book Club in raising diversity issues. First, through book selection. Diversity issues through book selection are raised through a process of currating books from Global South authors, authors with mixed identities, and categorizing theme by The Diversitea Book Club, then recommended in #TheDiversiteaRecs on their social media. Second, through book reading and discussion activities. Diversity issues in this activity are raised organically through discussions about the content or intrinsic elements of diverse books read, the personal experience of diverse book authors invited as speakers at the Tea Party, as well as the personal experiences of participants after reading diverse books that close with their identities. The movement carried out by The Diversitea Book Club has cognitive, affective, and social impacts. Cognitively, participants experienced increased knowledge related to diversity issues. Affectively, participant felt they had a safe place and weren’t “small” because their identities were often perceived as different. Socially, participants gained new connections and reading recommendations.
