Abstract

***** The advancement of wireless internet technology, specifically the Radio Local Area Network (R-LAN), generates ambient electromagnetic waves that have the potential to be converted into renewable electrical energy. This study aims to design and construct a Radio Frequency (RF) Energy Harvesting system operating at the 5 GHz R-LAN frequency to generate Direct Current (DC) voltage. The research method employed is Research and Development (R&D) utilizing the V-Model development approach. The hardware is designed using a Rectifier circuit with a 3-stage Voltage Multiplier topology utilizing HSMS-2862 Schottky diodes and a Rogers RO4350B substrate, integrated with an impedance matching network using the single stub technique. The design was simulated using Advanced Design System (ADS) 2019 software and physically tested using a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) and a multimeter. Simulation results demonstrate that the circuit operates at the 5 GHz frequency with a Return Loss of -11.543 dB, a VSWR of 1.721, and generates an output voltage of 719.53 mV at an input power of -10 dBm. Measurement results of the fabricated device indicate excellent impedance matching performance, surpassing the simulation results. The device resonates at 5.184 GHz (a 3.6% shift) with a Return Loss of -24.70 dB and a VSWR of 1.12. The maximum harvested DC voltage was 298 mV at a distance of 0 cm (near field) from the signal source. Despite the significant voltage drop over distance due to free-space path loss, the system proved to have optimal matching characteristics and is capable of converting 5 GHz electromagnetic waves into electrical energy.
